Pottery at San Ildefonso Pueblo comes from a tradition of many hundreds of years. In 1880 pots showing the Avanyu (Water Serpent) were first collected for the Smithsonian Institution. In the early part of 20th century, Maria and Julian Martinez developed the black-on-black pottery, a shiny black pot with matte black design. In the 1930's Rose Gonzales was inspired to begin carving her pottery after seeing an old carved pottery shard. Continued experimentation with slips, gem insets and other refinements, such as sgraffito carving, have been made by potters such as Blue Corn, Popovi Da, Tony Da, Tse-Pé, Barbara Gonzales, and Dora Tse-Pé.
As one of San Ildefonso Pueblo's online galleries (see www.sunbeamindianarts.com for work by Barbara Gonzales and family), John Gonzales offers high quality native clay products. Only the work of John Gonzales can be found on this website with the exception of a Maria Martinez bowl. This is strictly a "for sale"website, so please no inquiries about appraisals or work of any other artists.
